sustainability
Teak wood and sustainabilityHow does that fit together? A legitimate question!
We have also asked ourselves this question since the creation of the idea of Bali Woodland.
Teak wood is known for its longevity, resistance to weathering and natural beauty. So pro-arguments for teak are its high quality, long life and the fact that it can theoretically be grown sustainably. However, there are also some contra arguments, such as the high demand for teak, which leads to illegal deforestation, as well as concerns about the environmental impact of monocultural cultivation. So it is important to deal responsibly with teak wood
So how do we want to be/become sustainable?
First of all, only certified wood is used for the manufacture of our products.
Our wood is SLVK certified (SLVK: The Sistem Verifikasi Lealitas Kayu-SVLKIs an Indonesian certificate for the timber industry) and goes through theFLEGT Approval System.
It ensures the legal origin of wood from Indonesia. An SVLK certificate is the prerequisite for the import of wood from Indonesia into the EU. It also obliges producers to meet criteria for sustainable and social forestry.
The SVLK certificate is issued by the Indonesian Wood Backup Program and complies with the additional standard PHPL. Sustainable production forest management. The criteria of sustainable and social forestry.
Nevertheless, teak is a tropical wood. Our goal is to realize more reforestation of trees on site than we take for our products.
To achieve this goal, we work with theNon-profit organizationTrees4TreesTogether, the reforestation projects realized together with the local population in Indonesia.
"Trees4Trees™ is a non-profit foundation focused on renewing the environment and empowering local communities through reforestation and education. We are an organization engaged in "Tree Planting" activities, therefore you can "Donate Trees". We also join in "Community Forestry | Reforestation" to keep the earth together so that it remains sustainable."(https://trees4trees.org/?sort)
With each € 50 order value, we plant a tree with Trees4Trees.
On-site production
In addition to the ecological aspects, the social aspects are also important to us. We purchase our products directly and without intermediaries from our producers and regularly visit the workshops on site to get a permanent picture of the working conditions. A special feature of our local partner company is that an above-average number of women are employed in the workshops and the main workshop is located in a rather structurally weak village half an hour from Ubud. The workshop is the largest local employer and ensures a secure income for many families.
